Insurance Jobs in Sri Lanka — Roles, Employers & How to Apply

Insurance is one of the more consistent sources of hiring in Sri Lanka’s financial sector. Life and general insurers keep recruiting relationship managers, bancassurance sales staff, claims and operations interns, and specialist head-office roles all year round. This page explains how the industry is structured, what roles are typically open, and lists current insurance vacancies on CareerLK.

Sri Lanka’s Insurance Market

Sri Lanka’s insurance industry is regulated by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL) and split into life and general (non-life) insurance, following the Insurance Industry Act’s requirement that composite insurers separate the two lines into distinct companies.

The largest insurer is Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC), the state-owned national insurer established in 1962. It has changed ownership more than once: it was briefly privatised in 2003 before reverting to full government ownership in 2009, and it now operates as separate life and general entities, including Sri Lanka Insurance Life (SLIC Life).

On the private side, Union Assurance PLC is Sri Lanka’s first private life insurer, founded in 1987 and now a subsidiary of John Keells Holdings, one of the country’s largest listed conglomerates, since 2009. Other major life and general insurers include AIA Insurance, Ceylinco Life, Softlogic Life, Allianz Insurance Lanka, HNB Assurance and Amana Takaful.

Typical Insurance Roles

  • Sales and bancassurance: Relationship executives, relationship managers and bancassurance sales officers who sell life and general policies, often through bank branch partnerships.
  • Claims and operations: Claims interns, branch operations staff and corporate claims executives who process policies and settle claims.
  • Underwriting and actuarial: Underwriting assistants and actuarial analysts who assess and price risk, usually requiring progress toward actuarial exams (SOA or IFoA) or a related degree.
  • Head-office and specialist roles: Transformation, digital, finance and HR positions supporting the wider insurer.

What Insurers Typically Look For

  • Insurance sales and relationship roles are commonly open to candidates with strong G.C.E. Advanced Level results and good communication skills; a degree is preferred but not always mandatory for entry-level sales positions.
  • Claims, operations and specialist roles more often ask for a business or finance-related degree, and sometimes progress toward a professional qualification such as ACII, ANZIIF or the local Diploma in Insurance.
  • Because insurance sales is target-driven, employers commonly emphasise a “target-driven” or “ambitious” personality in these ads.
