Hotel Jobs for School Leavers in Sri Lanka: Entry Roles and Training Routes (2026)

Hotels and restaurants hire school leavers into kitchen, restaurant, front desk and housekeeping roles, and most staff start with a short training course. This guide covers the entry roles, the training routes after O/Ls and A/Ls, and what to check before you pay for a course.

Entry roles

Hospitality training is organised around four departments, and the same four appear as course names at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM):

  • Cookery (kitchen): trainee cook, commis and kitchen assistant roles. Pastry and bakery is a separate trade at many institutes.
  • Restaurant and bar (food and beverage): steward, waiter and bar assistant roles serving guests in restaurants, banquets and room dining.
  • Front office (hotel reception): reception and guest-service roles, which put more weight on spoken English.
  • Housekeeping: room attendant and public area cleaning roles.

After O/Ls

The craft level courses are built for beginners. SLITHM’s own course page says they train beginners with basic knowledge and skills for entry-level hospitality jobs. If you pick a private institute instead, compare the course length, the on-the-job period and whether the course is accredited at the NVQ level it advertises.

After A/Ls

A/L graduates can enter the 3-year SLITHM National Diploma in Hospitality Management, which covers professional cookery, hotel housekeeping, front office operations and restaurant and bar services. Others start with a craft course and work, then return for a diploma. Read jobs for A/L school leavers to compare it with banking and other options.

Check a course before you pay

  • Ask for the institute’s TVEC registration and look it up on nvq.gov.lk. Our NVQ levels guide explains what to look for.
  • Ask whether the NVQ assessment fee and any industrial training are included in the course fee.
  • Ask where trainees do their practical placements, and which hotels hire from the course.
  • Confirm the course covers the department you want to work in.

How to get your first job

Treat the industrial training period as a long interview, since hotels often keep trainees who are punctual and learn quickly. Keep your CV short and list the department, the hotel and the dates of your training. Our CV guide shows the format. Current openings are on our job vacancies in Sri Lanka page.
