Teaching Jobs in Sri Lanka — Private Schools & School Leaver Vacancies

Sri Lanka’s private and international school sector hires teachers, counsellors, librarians, lab staff and admin roles year-round, and often in large batches: a single school network will advertise across ten or more branches in one recruitment round. This page explains how teaching jobs in the private sector differ from government teaching posts, what qualifications schools typically ask for, and lists current teaching vacancies on CareerLK.

Private School Teaching vs. Government Teaching Posts

Sri Lanka’s education sector splits into two very different hiring tracks:

  • Government schools hire teachers through the Ministry of Education and the Department of Examinations, generally requiring a National Diploma in Teaching (NDT) or a recognised teaching qualification, along with the general open competitive exam process used for state-sector recruitment. See our guide to getting a government job in Sri Lanka for how gazette-based recruitment works.
  • Private and international schools recruit directly, without a centralised exam. Requirements vary by school and subject but commonly include a relevant degree, a recognised teaching diploma or PGDE where the subject demands it, and, for English-medium schools, a strong command of spoken and written English.

Who’s Hiring

Sri Lanka has a growing network of private international schools alongside long-established English-language institutes. Current CareerLK listings include multi-branch teaching rounds from school networks such as Leeds International School (11 branches across the Western and Southern provinces), OKI International School, and ESOL College International, alongside single-campus vacancies from schools such as Louvre College and Hejaaz International School.

Typical Roles in Private Schools

  • Subject teachers: English, mathematics, science and the arts are the most commonly advertised subjects, usually specifying the medium of instruction (English, Sinhala or Tamil) and the grade levels taught.
  • English-language instructors: English-medium colleges and language institutes hire dedicated English teachers, often across multiple branches at once.
  • Academic support staff: Librarians, lab technicians and academic coordinators who support the teaching staff rather than teach directly.
  • Student-facing admin roles: Front-office student counsellors and admissions staff, particularly at colleges that recruit students directly rather than through a national exam.

What Schools Look For

  • A relevant degree is the baseline for subject teaching; some schools also ask for a teaching diploma or a minimum number of years in a classroom.
  • English-medium schools consistently ask for genuine enthusiasm for teaching and strong communication skills in English, not just a qualification on paper.
  • Multi-branch schools usually let a single application be considered for more than one branch, so read the full list of locations before assuming a listing does not cover your area.
